Mechanical Modelling and Failure Identification of Impregnated Nb3Sn Rutherford cable stacks
Efficient LTS magnet system design requires accurate mechanical characterisation and constitutive modelling at the level of Rutherford cable stacks. The project analyses in detail the anisotropic finite deformation behaviour of impregnated 10-stacks made from Nb3Sn Rutherford cables, and investigates how the fracture toughness of the impregnating matrix system governs the fracture mechanics of those stacks. The observed behaviour is captured in a detailed constitutive model implemented in a finite element program, and the work makes a standard testing and analysis procedure available for future material characterisation, modelling and design activities.
