Enabling Technologies for the Stable Operation and Protection of Final Cooling Solenoids in a Muon Collider

Part of the Horizon Europe MuCol project, this work develops novel technologies for ultra-high-field, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) solenoids in the final cooling section of a muon collider. The specification — more than 40 T in a 6 cm aperture — demands significant advances in electro-thermal stability and quench protection, among other things. The project develops novel technologies for magnet protection, whether as innovative diagnostics that detect and localise electro-thermal instabilities, or as non-traditional electrical insulation, for example materials that switch between resistive and conductive behaviour as a function of temperature or of electric field.
