Additive Manufacturing for Structural Components in Superconducting Coils

Nb3Sn coils for superconducting accelerator magnets are impregnated together with their structural components — wedges, end spacers, winding formers. The adhesion between the impregnated winding and those parts is a potential weak point, and is often linked to excessive training of Nb3Sn magnets. Additive manufacturing can produce very complex structures such as the winding formers of canted cosine-theta coils, while adding functionality that improves adhesion and so magnet performance. The project brings those benefits into superconducting accelerator magnets.
