Surface kinematics across the wider FCC area must be known with enough precision and spatial resolution to assess the long-term deformations that matter for the FCC — movements that could affect the access shafts, the tunnel, the alignment and CERN's coordinate reference frames, and that develop over several years, so that predicting them months to years ahead is possible. Where such deformations exist, they have to be accounted for in maintaining the reference frames, for example through a geodetic deformation model, and in the detailed design of the alignment solutions. The FCC Geodesy study made clear that the presence or absence of relevant surface kinematics had never been investigated geodetically; this project fills that gap.
