The Insertion Device group at PSI runs an R&D programme on high-temperature superconducting undulators, reducing the period length and increasing the magnetic field well beyond today's capability. A preliminary assessment of a 10 mm period and 4 mm magnetic gap indicates a field above 2 T. The technology offers medium-energy storage rings (2–3 GeV) and compact FELs (6–7 GeV) a route into the hard X-ray regime up to 60 keV, today the exclusive domain of large facilities.
